When we goes on a tripwe always think about the essentials. Clothes : OkayGuides: OkaySwimsuit : OkayPassport : Okay… However, there are still objects that we don't necessarily think about, but which are nevertheless essential. So here is my list of 10 essential items to take with you when traveling. This list of items is very personal; do not hesitate to complete it in the comments.
A flashlight
No need to go to the jungle or on an expedition to the Himalayas to need a flashlight. A poorly lit street, a power outage in your hotel, an object lost in the dark… You understand that a lamp can always be useful. Plus, you don't need to take a big, heavy lamp. A dynamo modellight and sufficiently functional as found in large sports equipment stores is more than sufficient.
A small notebook and a pen
Here are two other items that don't take up much space, but are still useful: pen and paper. Write down an address, fill out an entry form into the country on the plane, take notes for your blog, etc. The pen and notebook are more than useful. And yet, we often forget it (well, it happens to me frequently).
A good big book
Two hours to kill in an airport, a beautiful sunny afternoon on the terrace of a café, 12 hours by train to reach your next destination… We ultimately don't have much time to read while traveling, but sometimes it's very pleasant (or useful, to kill time). There is no question of overloading yourself with the complete Jules Verne series. But, a good book, which talks about travel and adventure, will be a perfect companion to your trip.
An extra bag
We've all been there: leaving with a packed bag. Buy souvenirs, more or less voluminous… And worry about bringing it all home! As long as your airline allows you to check in multiple bags, bring an additional bag not too heavy at the start at the bottom of your bag will save you these problems.
A USB key
A USB key doesn't take up any space. Taking one when traveling will allow you to keep all your important documents with you in digital format: scanned passports, various reservations, important telephone numbers, plane tickets, etc. (be sure to hide your USB key well). In addition, it can be useful for you to relieve your camera's memory card and recover files or photos from other travelers or people you meet in the country.
A large trash bag and an airtight bag
The rain! Unpredictable, especially in tropical regions. If you don't fear it, your business does. Bring a large plastic bag (or better, special backpack packaging) as well as an airtight pouch for your documents (passports, etc.).
A corkscrew
Well, this is the wine lover speaking to you. Even 10,000 km from home, I enjoy drinking a glass of wine from time to time. Especially since we sometimes find very good wine abroad (for example in California, but also, more surprisingly: in Vietnam!).
A game of cards
As with a good book, a game of cards can help you kill time while traveling. The game can also allow you to meet people. Personally, I always go with my UNO.
An inflatable pillow (and earplugs)
Sleeping well on a plane or on public transport saves time. This allows you to start visiting on arrival. And above all, it makes time pass faster! A good inflatable pillow and earplugs allow you to be more comfortable, despite relatively precarious comfort (sleeping sitting up is not necessarily natural!). It doesn't take up much space, and it can even be useful in less comfortable and noisier hostels or hotels…
A camera cleaning kit
Last item on this list: a kit for cleaning your camera. Rain, sand, dust… cameras don't like it. A small brush, a cloth and a small air pump, it doesn't take up any space. And this will allow you to extend the lifespan of your devices! And you, what are the essential items that you take on every trip? Tell us in the comments!
