1. Discover the old town of Faro

The old town of Faro has a unique atmosphere. Although it attracts thousands of visitors each year, there is always a picturesque appearancevery different from the tumult of big cities. Take the time to visit this historic center on foot to discover its whitewashed houses typical of the region, its small shops and its architectural treasures.

Furthermore, to discover the city center of Faro, you will undoubtedly come across the Arco da Vila. Like the Triumphal Arch of Lisbon, this monument marks a gateway to the historic center of the city. 3. Explore the Ria Formosa Natural Park

South of Faro, you can discover the Ria Formosa Natural Park. This lagoon is one of the natural wonders of the region. It extends over more than 60km long and includes several islands. It is also a important economic zone since there is an oyster and shellfish farm and a salt extraction area.

Indeed, Faro is surrounded by a vast lagoon which offers many pleasant beaches where you can relax. For example, you can opt for the Faro beach which extends for hundreds of meters on the edge of the city. Golden sand, calm sea: it will be an ideal place to swim with the family during a stay in Portugal.
Additionally, Faro also has small islands like Culatra Island Or Ilha Barreta. There you will find less crowded coves and beaches.

5. Discover the Museu Municipal

This museum open Tuesday to Sunday is a good way to learn a little more about the history of Faro on a small budget. Indeed, there is a large collection of archaeological remains, including objects from prehistoric, Roman or even medieval times. There is also a collection of paintings dating from the 16th to the 20th century.

In the small town of Estoi, near Faro, we find one of the most important historical monuments of the Algarve: the Estoi Palace. This majestic monument has varied architectural influences : in baroque, rococo, romantic or even neoclassical style.

Its red colored facade is easily identifiable and contributes greatly to its charm. Unfortunately, this palace has been partly privatized by a hotel. 7. Visit the Carmelite Church of Faro

North of Faro, about ten minutes walk from the port, I invite you to discover the charming Carmelite Church of Faro. Indeed, this church with yellow facade leaves no traveler indifferent… It was built in the 18th century in a baroque style.

However, if this monument attracts visitors, it is especially for the small chapel hidden at the bottom of its garden. Built in 1816, in a neoclassical style, there are walls covered with human skulls and bones. It is also nicknamed “the chapel of bones”.

8. Visit Loulé and its market

Loulé is a well-kept secret in the Algarve! Indeed, it is a much less touristy town than Faro, while being located only a few minutes away.

You will therefore be happy to discover an incredible charm while enjoying a quiet atmosphere. For a day, you can discover its architecture influenced by the Moorish occupation, but also stroll through your market which is one of the most popular in the area.

Indeed, the covered halls of Loulé constitute a major tourist interest. This red and white building of Moorish inspiration is particularly photogenic. But, this visit will above all allow you to immerse yourself in local life and capture scenes of life here and there that will make you smile. It's also a very good way to buy fresh products made in Portugal.
